Modern Day Hero

"World-historical men - the heroes of an epoch - must be recognized as its clear-sighted ones; their deeds and their words are the best of their time."
- G. W. F. Hegel, German Philosopher

Grandparents are prominent. They are valued and treasured. Their influences are legacies.

Virgilio Ferido, my grandfather, was born on January 2, 1927 in San Julian Sur, Vigan City. I was unfortunate to have not seen him in person in my whole life. I have heard stories of him but never heard a story from him.

He was independent.
He was smart;
my grandmother says he outwits most of his opponents.
He was brave;
like a warrior, he fought without fear.
And... stoic.
He was patient and uncomplaining; gathering all the burden and carrying those on his back. He had been present in the second World War, and had been fighting for the country. He was a soldier, and a fighter. Whatever he faced, he always stood still. Even before the face of death. He had an unshakable strength that we all wish to possess. He retired with the grade of 2nd Lieutenant from the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

Grandparents. They have lived for such a long time that their experiences can serve as influences in our life.
